It's great that you already have some ideas for your landscape. Both roses and vegetables love full sunshine so choose the sunniest places in your yard for your rose bed and your vegetable bed. Roses prefer a rich, loamy soil and vegetables grow best when clay soil is amended with organic matter so you might want to consider renting a rototiller to prepare the planting beds. With a tiller you can work compost or aged manure into the deeply into the ground. Start by tilling each area and raking out any grass, weeds, or other debris. Then spread 4-5 inches of organic matter over each bed and till or dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Rake the soil smooth and plant your roses - or your veggies. Once everything is planted, add more organic matter over the bare soil to help suppress weeds, moderate soil temperatures and slow evaporation. At the end of the gardening season you can dig the mulch into the soil and add fresh mulch. After a few years of incorporating organic matter your Georgia clay will become rich garden loam. Best wishes with your landscape!
