Daylilies will grow in any soil, as long as it is not waterlogged, and will survive winter weather in Virginia, so your plants should begin to break dormancy by mid-May, after the soil warms. If new leaves are not emerging by then, dig the plant and check to make sure the rootmass is still healthy. Good luck with your daylilies.
