Hi, we have planted yellow privett bushes as a privacy hedge last may and am wondering when to trim them to gain fullness on the sides instead of the growth sprouting out on the tops? thank you

As soon as you see new growth in the early spring you can trim your privets back. I use a hedge trimmer and just lightly go over the entire shrub to promote lots of new growth. Annual pruning like this will result in growth over the entire shrub and keep it full and bushy. You can prune your privets now. Enjoy!
