I would make the rock a focal point and try to camoflage the stump. How about planting an attractive groundcover that will creep over the stump and cascade partially over the rock? Pachysandra is an excellent ground cover for your area, creeping thyme has tiny leaves and purple flowers and hugs surfaces like rocks; moss phlox is another matting ground (or object) cover; butterfly milk weed has bright orange flower spikes; salvia and cat mint have spikes of lavender flowers in the summer; ornamental grasses can add texture to the site and to top everything off you could plant a small flowering shrub. Just a little imagination and a few of the above plants can turn your rock and stump into a delightful garden area.

Best wishes with your project!
