I live near Chicago, VERY windy/cold in winter. You recommemded Redbud tree to me, as I am looking for yellow color in fall. I read they break easily in wind. True? Any comments on Paperback Brich trees?

I didn't recommend the paperbark birch because it grows into a huge tree: 45-70' tall and 20-35' wide and I though you wanted something smaller. It is a very fast growing tree and fast growers are susceptible to breakage in the wind because the growth isn't very sturdy. Birches are also plagued by borers in your gardening region so I'd avoid planting them. If you regularly prune a redbud tree it will develop a sturdy branch structure and won't be quite so prone to breakage. There might be other trees to consider - visit your local nursery or garden center for more ideas. Best wishes with whichever tree you choose. Enjoy that fall color!
