It is discouraging to garden on poor soil, so if there is any way you can amend the soil by working in some organic material such as compost, the plants will grow better. Here are some perennial plants to consider for your shady rock garden: hosta, ajuga, ceratostigma (plumbago), epimedium, euonymous (wintercreeper), perennial geranium, hedera (English ivy), lamium, liriope, and gaultheria.. Most of these plants are available in a number of varieties, so you are bound to find some you like!
