Crab grass is an annual grass and not deeply rooted so you can hand pull the weeds and then apply a pre emergent herbicide to keep any seeds from germinating later in the summer. Or, you can pull the crabgrass, roots and all, and then cover over the bare soil with weed barrier or 2-3 inches of organic mulch such as compost to keep the seeds from germinating. Either way, you'll eliminate the crabgrass.
