|I have just purchased a lace cap hydranga. How much sun does it need? Our spring is dry & hot with May the hottest month at 90's tops, summer is cooler and rainy. What will be its ultimate size? When and how should it be pruned?|
|Lace cap hydrangea is best located in a part shade to full shade location. Plant in a soil amended with lots of compost. It does best in a moderate pH range. If your soil pH is high you may have problems with chlorosis (yellowing of younger leaves).
If your winter temperatures drop into the mid 20's or below, the plant will likely die to the ground and resprout. This is not a problem. Just cut the old shoots off at the ground and new ones will replace them.
If your winters are warmer, you should prune the bush back about 1/3 in the fall for thickening of the branches and good spring growth. Plants that do not freeze will reach about 6 feet high, but can be kept lower. However, in your climate, their growth may be significantly different.
