I have a small indoor lemon tree. Every time 2-3 new leaves appear it loses 2-3 old ones thus never gaining in number. Any ideas why this happens?

New growth is a good sign, but it doesnt' sound as though your lemon tree is actually thriving. You might try taking your tree outdoors this spring and summer where it can experience the higher light levels, warmer temperatures and fresh air. Start by putting it in a shaded area for a few days, then gradually expose it to more and more sunlight. It should respond by putting out lots of new growth. Be sure to take it back indoors in late summer or early fall!
