|I want to put some kind of flowering plant in a planter on the deck that blooms from spring through summer. I heard roses are good but I am worried that the thorns might hurt the kids. I live in Southern, NJ, so I'd need something that can make it through the winter or be brought into the house in the winter.

|I think miniature roses would fit the bill. You will need to take them indoors in the wintertime, but they can go back outside each spring. There really are no plants hardy enough to overwinter in a flower box in your cold winter region so anything you plant will need to be overwintered indoors. Minature roses adapt well to growing indoors during the winter months. Enjoy your garden!
