|I would like to grow my own garlic but don't know when or what type would grow in west Florida.|
|You can grow garlic about anywhere you can grow onions! Plant cloves for best results. Work an inch or two of compost into the planting bed if available. Set cloves into the soil in October. Mulch the bed after plants are growing to reduce weed competition. Water as needed to keep it growing vigorously...larger plants = larger and better clove production.|
Garlic needs a month or two of cool weather (temps drop below 40 degrees) during its growing season to prepare the plant for bulbing. Then when daylength reaches 13 hours in spring and soil temps are above 60 degrees, bulbs begin to form.
