If you don't want to pull them out you can pour vinegar or boiling water on them. Of course this will also kill any grass so it might not be an option. Broadleaf weed killers will kill the dandelions and then to avoid having another crop next year, put your lawn on a regular watering, feeding and mowing schedule and it will grow thick enough to crowd out weeds next spring. You can compost the dandelion weeds but remove the flowers or any seed heads before tossing them into the compost bin. Unless your compost gets really hot it won't cook those weed seeds and you can be introducing them to your entire garden when you use the compost.
