do i need to add rocks to bottom of container to give flowers height?

No, don't add rocks, just fill the containers with enough potting soil to reach about 2 inches below the rim of the pot then dig a hole in the potting soil to plant your plants. As they grow they will reach above the rim of the container. Enjoy your new flowers!
