I live in Virginia Beach VA. I have a large gardenia by my deck that needs to be moved to a better location. It was shaded but I had to cut down the tree a few years ago. It currently gets full sun until very late afternoon and is doing OK but not great. When is best time to move it and where?

Either spring or fall are usually good times to move landscape plants. That's when weather is cooler and rainfall most abundant. After moving your gardenia give it some extra TLC by watering it deeply once or twice a week (depending upon weather). Expect some leaf drop after the move due to transplant stress but once the roots become re-established your gardenia should be happy in its new location. Hope so!
