Bark split - Knowledgebase Question

I have a Dappled Willow tree that has been in my yard about 3 years now. Yesterday I just noticed an area of the trunk where the bark split open. The tree still appears to be doing well aside from that. Still getting new leaves and filling in nicely. I am afraid of insects or disease. I don't want to lose the tree, what should I do?

Bark splitting and sloughing can be a result of a number of environmental factors - winter frost or wind or sunscald. In some willows, it is a normal part of growing up. I wouldn't worry too much about it. A healthy tree will compartmentalize the damage and heal itself. Just continue to give your dappled willow good care and I think it will be just fine.
