Disease pathogens specific to members of the nightshade family, which includes tomatoes, can remain in the soil after the plants have been removed at the end of the season. That's why we recommend rotating your crops each year. As long as your plants were not diseased, you are probably safe in planting them in the same spot a second year, if necessary. I'd recommend trying to find a different spot in your garden in subsequent years, just to be on the safe side.
