That's a good question! Usually they are packaged with the top up and the roots down in the package. Inspect the brown shoots and see if you can tell whether or not they have been cut straight across. If so, that's probably the top and the long white part is the root. If you are still in doubt you might want to take it back to the garden center and ask for assistance in identifying the top and the bottom of the plant.
