It sounds like lichen which is a mossy type growth. It manufactures its own food so it is not feeding on your trees but it can hold too much moisture against the bark and cause problems down the road. A lime sulfur (Bordeaux) spray will kill the lichen and it will slough off on its own. Be sure to follow label directions for application.
