|Almost any plant will grow happily in a container for several years so choose what you like and plant it in a pot. Or, if you are going to dig a hole to accommodate a container, why not just dig a larger area and mix in some compost or peat moss or shredded leaves and plant directly into the amended soil? Organic matter will loosen clay soils and help them drain well so it might be an option for you.
