There is a 10+ yr.old tree in the backyard of my complex but it won't bear fruit. It has a small off shoot tree attached; could this be the problem?

I'm not sure why your avocado tree is not producing. At ten plus years, it should be mature enough to flower and fruit. Watch it closely for signs of flowering. No flowers, no fruit. You can cut off the suckering growth if it is unattractive. Then try feeding the tree with a low nitrogen, high phosphorous, high potassium fertilizer (such as a 5-10-10). The phosphorous should encourage blooming. Best wishes with your tree!
