eastern redbud - Knowledgebase Question

I planted it last summer and it seemed to be doing well. This spring I thought it was dead, but just noticed some small branches growing out of the trunk about 2 inches from the ground. No leaves anywhere else on the tree. Is it worth saving, or should I trash it? Is this normal?

What you describe is not normal. It does indicate dieback, probably from harsh winter weather. It sounds as though the roots survived the winter, though, so prune everything down and allow the shoots to develop and you will have a new shrub - or a tree if you prune away everything except one strong stem. Best wishes with your eastern redbud!
