Is it a good or bad thing to fill in empty space in flower beds, veg. garden, and around new trees and scrubs/ I have 1/2 acre of bare ground to cover - will also have a lot of grass clippings. hoping to feed new dirt, control weeds, conserve water, and keep roots cooler.

You can use your grass clippings as mulch as long as you remember that as the grass on the tops of the mounds dries out, the dry layer will shed water, which might defeat the purpose. It would be better to spread the grass out so it can dry and then use the dry clippings as mulch. Or, periodically rake the fresh grass mulch to break up the top layer so rainfall and water can percolate down to the soil.
