My iris are finishing up blooming. I want to redo the bed they're in, thin them out and tranplant some to different spots in the garden. How soon can I do this? How much of the foliage should I cut back? I'm anxious to get it done.

You should wait until late summer to divide and transplant your bearded iris. When dividing, cut or break off the ends and transplant them, discarding the old center of the rhizome. You can cut the foliage and roots back to about 6 inches. Replant just below the top of the soil. Then mulch over the top of the bed to suppress weeds and help hold in moisture.
