what do I do when the flowers start to turn brown.

When the flowers begin to turn brown it is time to cut them off your plant. Lilac flowers will last a couple of weeks before they are spent but rainy weather can make them turn brown at a faster pace. Prune them off your shrub to make the plant look more attractive, and to encourage new growth.
