We have a liliac bush, which has never bloomed. It is young, gets lots of sun, and has lots of new growth. We want to prune it this year to see if that helps next year, but we are unsure of how to prune the liliac

You can use hedge trimmers on your lilac or simply reduce the length of some of the stems at random lengths so the plant looks natural rather than sheared. I cut mine back by 6-8" all over to keep it thick and dense and full of new flowering shoots. Don't be shy about pruning. Every stem you cut will develop two new stems at the cut plus some new growth behind the cut, towards the center of the plant. Best wishes with your lilac!
