Azaleas sometimes are hosts to algae growth. As a rule, the algae is not feeding off the azaleas, but it can hold too much moisture against the bark and eventually cause rot. You can use a lime/sulfur spray directly on the moss or lichen to kill it and it will eventually slough off, or after it is dead you can peel or rub it off.
