It is ok to start vegetable seeds outdoors now? I remember as a young girl, my parents never started seeds indoors, they just plant outdoors and everything thing grew. What is the difference now? I have beans, carrots, cabbage and tomatoes. Is it ok to start Marigold seeds in containers now?

There's really no difference in seeds, it's just that your parents knew when the weather was warm enough to plant. They probably watched for blooming shrubs or nesting birds to signal that spring had arrived. People now are in a hurry to get things started early and many have only recently moved to new areas and don't have a clue as to when planting dates might be. So, they start seeds indoors so they will be ready to plant when the weather is warm enough. You can plant outdoors from Memorial Day on, and you can start your marigold seeds in containers now, too. Enjoy your garden!
