The top half of my barberrry and burning bushes died during the winter. They've done well for 3 years until this. What happened?

The newest growth is at the top of your plants so if you had warm fall weather and then winter suddenly arrived, the new growth probably did not have time to harden off and was more susceptible to winter damage. To avoid this next year, don't feed your plants after mid-summer and don't prune after late summer. This will give the new growth of the season an opportunity to harden off before winter arrives. Good luck with your plants.
