Full sun is usually defined as 8 or more hours of direct sunshine. Partial sun is either full morning sun or full afternoon sun (about 4 hours of direct sunshine). Maple trees can become quite large, but their size depends upon which cultivar you choose. As maples grow and their canopies become thick, they can shade out lawns, and they often develop roots above ground level, so if you plan to have lawn, maples might not be the best choice. There are other shade trees you might consider planting, with less dense canopies and deeper roots. Enjoy your landscape!
