should you prune back the plants in June to get a full flowering bloom in the fall

Yes, pinching back the plants will make them bushy and will delay the flowering until this fall. You can simply pinch back the tip of each stem every 3-4 weeks until late summer or you can cut the mums back twice a year. In June, I cut back the chrysanthemums to 2" in height. In July, I cut them back to 6" in height. Since I have started doing this I have full, lush mums that bloom September through October.
