I planted 9 ornamental grasses last year and 5 of them died. What is the correct way to care for these grasses and what type, if any, fertilizer should I use?

Not all ornamental grasses are suitable for all gardening regions because some are frost tender. It may be that you planted tender grasses and they did not survive the winter. Ornamental grasses, for the most part, love sunshine and well draining soils. They are normally cut back in the late winter and new growth emerges from the roots of the plants. Here's a publication listing the hardy (and not so hardy) ornamental grasses available. Choose those that are hardy to the coldest gardening zones and they should perform well in your gardening region. Here's the web address:
