I want a lawn that I can walk in with my bare feet. What can I do to my existing lawn to make it better. I have a green lawn, but it is very thin and wirey. Can I just see and fertilize to make it better? Help I am a rookie and don't know where to start.

A sparse and wiry lawn could just indicate the type of turfgrass you are growing or it could indicate the roots are struggling in compacted soils. I think I would aerate the lawn. A core aerator will remove one inch by three inch plugs from the lawn. Leave the plugs on the lawn and they will dissolve in rain or water from the sprinklers. After aerating spread a thin layer of sand or compost over the area and water it in well. The sand or compost plus the soil from the plugs will work their way down into the holes left by the plugs and result in more root growth and a thicker, lusher lawn. After aerating you can overseed your entire lawn or you can just let it spread out and thicken up all on its own. Best wishes with your lawn.
