There's a fungus that attacks summer squash (Choanephora cucurbitarum), causing wilted blossoms and fruit rot. The infected fruit rot rapidly, and fungus mold appears on the rotted area. The fungus is spread by insects, wind, and splashing water, and the disease is promoted by high-moisture conditions. Remove the infected fruit from the garden, and cut the stems back if they show signs of fungal infection, just to keep the disease from spreading to other fruit on the vine.
