Aptenia cordifolia 'Apple Red' is an exceptional groundcover for your area, growing 6"-8" tall, bearing bright red flowers and requiring very little water. Also consider Kinnikinnick, Calylophus hartwegii, Gazania, Malephora (Ice Plant) or Ground Morning Glory. Obviously, the closer you plant, the faster coverage you'll get. Spacing depends upon the average spread of each plant, which variees. Divide the amount of space you have with the average spread of the plant you choose to give you an idea of how many plants you'll need and how far apart to space them. Good luck with your new groundcover!
