Is it a good idea to snip off the dead blooms/seed pods from a lilac after it has bloomed?

Removing the spent flowers is an excellent idea. If your lilac needs a little light pruning, you can cut the stems back, as well. New blooms will form on branch ends where there are two buds, so avoid cutting off those branches until after they've bloomed, or you'll lose next year's blooms.
