My tree did not grow leaves so far. The branches are still pliable. Any idea on what might have happened.

Thanks, Joan

If there are no leaf buds (swellings on the branches), perhaps the buds were nipped by a late frost? If so the tree will eventually develop new leaf buds. As long as the branches are pliable, the tree is still alive. You'll just have to be patient to see what it does. Very strange, indeed!
