I have a 14' long by 6' wide area in the front of my home that I would like to put some plants and shrubs and flowers possibly. My zip code is 12701 its in NY. I have a hydrangea to start with. I have no experience with gardening. Can you help me with some ideas on what to plant? I would like things that don't have to be replanted every year.

In addition to your hydrangea, consider planting another shrub or two:
Spirea Magic Carpet is an extremely colorful dwarf shrub grows 2-3 feet tall with a 24 inch spread and has vibrant yellow leaves for most of the growing season. New foliage is a bright orange red and blossoms a deep rose.

Carpet Rose is another suggestion. This 2-3 feet tall shrub rose perfect for hedges or as a single specimen. Thousands of flowers coming both in single and semi-double form and in colors ranging from pure white, pink, magenta, red and yellow cover the entire bush until frost. Extremely hardy, drought tolerant and pest and fuss free.

Or, Weigela variegata. Gracefully arching branches of this 4-6 foot tall bush get covered with rosy pink blossoms in late spring attracting Hummingbirds like mad. Foliage is bright green with a creamy white edge. Perfect in a mixed border or standing alone as a very pretty focal point.

Some to include in your garden might be: Armeria (Sea Pink), Aster, Dianthus (Pinks), Dicentra (Bleeding Heart), Digitalis (Foxglove), Geraniums, Gypsophilia (Baby's Breath, there are pink varieties), Heuchera (Coralbells, there are pink varieties), Malva, Veronica (Speedwell), Liatris (Blazing Star), Monarda (Beebalm), Echinacea (Coneflower), Paeonia (Peony), Phlox Paniculata, Poppy, Lychnis (Angel Blush), Helichrysum (Rose Icicle), Hollyhocks, Sweet Pea, Celosia, Cosmos, Astilbe, Chrysanthemum, Filipendula (Queen of the Prairie), Impatiens, Iris (pink varieties), Hemerocallis (Daylily, pink varieties), Oenothera (Ozark Sundrops), Penstemon (Beardtongue), Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower), Achillea, Cleome (Spider Flower), Salvia, Xeranthemum (Immortelle), Petunia, and Snapdragon.

Obviously you won't have room for them all but you can pick and choose your favorites. Enjoy your garden!
