You've picked a challenge because the bat plant, Tacca integrifolia, is quite difficult to start from seed. Germination can take as long as 270 days. This is one plant that you want to tackle as an experiment, not as a dependable source of flowers for this summer's garden! Soak the seeds for 72 hours before sowing in sandy, peaty soil, and keep the seed tray in a warm location (70-80 degrees F).

This plant is a perennial in regions with winter daytime temperatures of 70-85 degrees F and nighttime temperatures above 55. In colder areas, they are best grown in greenhouses where they can receive the high humidity they require. Good luck!
