I have had some recommendations to plant a Raymond or Shammel Ash. I have also heard to steer away because of a new beetle making its way West. Is this a valid concern? I also had a recommendation of the Empress Tree for fast growth and shade. What is the good/bad on Empress in Arizona. How well doe the purple plum do here. I understand it is short lived. Any suggestions for beauty andshade

Ash trees do grow here, but tend to attract aphids which makes them drip honeydew. Instead of Empress tree, how about growing Jacaranda? They are better adapted to the summer heat. Another suggestion is Dalbergia sissoo. Carob also makes a nice shade tree and if you have a lot of room, cottonwoods are nice. Purple leaf plum trees are very slow growing and have a rather upright growth habit - instead of a nice full canopy that you would relate to a shade tree. Best wishes with your new tree!
