Some grasses such as bermuda and St. Augustine naturally produce runners. When the runners touch the ground they root. This is how the lawn becomes thick. If your turf is developing long runners you are not mowing it often enough or short enough. Mow as often as necessary to keep the turf about 1 1/2 to 2" tall and that should take care of the extra long runners. Good luck with your lawn!
