After my strawberry bed has finished bearing, can the leaves be mowed with a lawn mower to prepare the bed for next year?

Yes, it sounds radical, but you can mow your strawberry patch after fruiting. Set the mower blade to a height of 2 inches and be careful not to damage the crowns of the plants. Then remove the debris and any weak plants and weeds. Thin the remaining plants to about 8 inches apart. Fertilize the bed with a general balanced fertilizer and watch the new growth appear. After rejuvenating a bed in this manner two years in a row, it's best to move the bed to a new location.
