I have critters (possum, raccoons) that have dug under my stoop in back and died. I'd like to close that hole but how do I stop them from returning? The backyard is all or mostly clay and the stoop has 3 sides.

A fence may keep them out, although they can climb as well as tunnel under a fence. Try using a sturdy wire mesh and bury the bottom edge of it horizontal to the ground and bent outward about a foot. Once you've attached the fence to something solid, the critters won't be able to access the area.
