|I have a chain link fence around my yard. i need a trimmer that I can use to cut thick grass and bushes that are on my fence. this yard has not been landscaped or really tended to for years. I am trying to make it look neat and presentable before i even start planting or trying to add to it. I didn't know if there was a trimmer that the fence would not tear up?|
|String trimmers will work against a chain link fence but the fence will eat the nylon string every 15-20 feet if you're not careful. With practice you'll be able to get most of the grass and weeds without breaking the line too often. Another suggestion - there are propane "flamers" that work well to remove weedy growth near chainlink fences. You don't actually torch the weeds, but you run the flame close to the weeds. The heat makes the fluids in the tissues expand, which ruptures the cells and causes the weeds to die. Or, once you've gotten the weeds out you might consider laying black plastic under the fence and placing river rocks over the plastic. Weeds won't grow through and it will solve your problem for many years.
Best wishes with your landscape renovation.
