As you've discovered, not all fertilizers, even when applied in the right amounts, are safe to use on all types of lawns. Be sure to read the fine print on the package. It will tell you which turf types it is safe to use on and which turfs you should not use the product on. This is especially important when using a weed and feed product. The herbicides cannot always distinguish what plants are weeds and what plants are the type of turf you are growing. The extension agent was correct - watering will leach the product from your turf and allow the grass to recover and green up again. Try to find out what type of grasses you are growing (the extension office can help you identify the grass) and then be sure to use a fertilizer made especially for your turf type. Best wishes with your lawn.
