My evergreen shrubs are totally brown - with very little new growth. I have fertilized this spring, put in spikes, and finally seeing some new growth. How do I get rid of all those brown needles?

Sounds like winter damage but without knowing exactly the type of evergreens you are growing I can't make any specific recommendations about pruning. Some evergreens will not develop new needles on bare wood so don't prune your shrubs back just yet. With any luck the new growth will be full and lush and cover up the brown centers of the plants. If you know the names of your shrubs, submit another question and we'll do some research into their growth habits so you will know what you can expect.

Best wishes with your shrubs.
