You may not be very fond of insects and spiders, but you wouldn't really want to eliminate them all from your garden. Insects help pollinate flowers and clean up organic matter, and spiders prey on insects, consuming rather large numbers of them during the course of a season. There are a few plants that emit odors that insects find disagreeable, and a few plants that attract insects away from more desireable plants, so maybe what you're thinking of. The lemon scented geranium (Pelargonium crispum) is reported to repel mosquitos, especially if you crush a few leaves to release the scent. Other plants that repel insects include French Marigolds (Tagetes patula), mints and Sweet Basil. Interplant these varieties with your veggies and you'll have fewer destructive pests in your garden.
