Can astilbe plants be split like hostas, and if so, what is the best time of year to do this? Thanks.

Spring or fall are the best times to dig and divide plants. Astilbes have the same root habit as hostas. You are likely to find a large mass of tangled roots when you dig your astilbe and you may not be able to separate the mass by hand because it will be tightly knit together. You can lay the plant on its side and slice through the roots to make divisions. As long as each new division has both roots and tops, they should be fine. Replant as soon as possible. Best wishes with your project!
