| this tree is beautifull but the branches have large bulges in them and they are splitting.The branches also seem to be growing in a curled up position rather than straight out. what can I do to save this tree |
| The bulges are called galls and mites are responsible. In early spring as the new growth emerges, the overwintering mites crawl to the foliage and lay eggs from which hatch gall mites. The gall mites feed on the expanding leaves and induce the host tissue to form galls inside of which the mites feed and reproduce. The offspring of the gall mites are overwintering forms which leave the galls and crawl to the bark to spend the winter. Although the galls are alarming, they probably do no measurable harm to the tree, so control is recommended. I'm not sure what might be causing the branches to curl. They may be showing signs of insect feeding so inspect the branches to see what you can find. Good luck with your tree! |
