|My father has been gardening for many years and he is having a problem with his Broccoli this year. For the first time his broccoli has not formed any heads. He planted them at the end of March. The plants are very healthy and are almost 2 1/2 feet tall. He only uses Miracle Gro to feed his plants so its hard to figure out why this happened. He said he is ready to just pull them out, what would cause this to happen?
|The heads that form on broccoli are actually the immature flower buds (or inflorescence). In order to develop flowers a plant must be mature. In the case of your father's broccoli crop, two things may be happening; the plants may have been overfed which would produce lots of green stalk, and the plants are not yet mature enough to develop flower buds. Broccoli usually takes from 80 to 102 days to mature from transplant size, so yours should be at least beginning to develop heads within the next week or two. Don't give up on them just yet!|
