We have just planted our first garden. Something has been eating the leaves off of the sunflower shoots. What might do that, and how can we put a stop to it?

I'm not sure who/what might be eating sunflower leaves because they are prickly/hairy. Maybe the best approach would be to place a barrier around the plant to keep soil dwellers and 4-legged critters away. Place 3-4 stakes (bamboo skewers will work) and then wrap nylon netting or polyspun garden cloth around the stakes. Either of these materials will allow fresh air to circulate but will keep bugs out. When the plants get a little older they should be able to fend for themselves. Hope it works for you!
